This complete collection of eight Scottish Pattisons Cyclists Road Maps, issued by Pattisons Limited, Scotch Whisky Distillers in the late 1800s, were small promotional gifts, promoting the Pattisons whisky blend, aimed specifically at sporting types (hunting, shooting, fishing, yachting, golfing, curling, coaching, and cycling!). In the late 19th century Pattisons was the largest whisky wholesaler and blender in Scotland. Pattisons was run by brothers Robert & Walter Pattison, who had inherited it from their father, and it enjoyed spectacular growth in the 'whisky boom' of the late 19th century. The business ran into serious financial difficulites and collapsed in 1899 as a result of fraud and serious mismanagement by the two brothers, both of whom subsequently served prison sentences.
