The next edition was ten years later in 1744, then further editions in 1754, 1758, 1764, 1772, 1777, and 1785. Before 1769 the editions either have one or no recorded examples. This 1734 edition has not been recorded hitherto. Page edges slightly toned. Contemporary navy blue endpapers. Simple ink inscription on verso of front free endpaper, contemporary with binding. Old newspaper cutting tipped in at rear, referencing the previous owner Sophie Georgiana Robertina Yorke, Countess of Hardwicke (1840-1923), daughter of Henry Wellesley, 1st Earl Cowley. Her husband, the 5th Earl, was an inveterate gambler and accumulated significant debts, eventually having to put the family seat, the Wimpole Hall Estate, up for sale in 1891 to settle bank debts. 74 x 90 mm. Contemporary full silver filigree three-layered binding; top layer with broader flower outlines at the borders and flowing central patterns; the middle layer decorated with fine mostly circular twisted filigree designs; the base is a solid layer of silver ground. With two original beautifully cast silver clasps. Unmarked or obscured marks; binding in very good condition. Not in Bondy, nor Spielmann, nor Welsh. The 1734 Stationers' Company "Primer or Catechism" is interesting because it shows the Anglican Church's ongoing effort to standardise religious instruction using familiar devotional formats (primers/catechisms) for laypeople and children, bridging medieval traditions with Reformation principles, and serving as a key commercial educational tool with official royal authorisation for use across Britain, revealing how print helped shape common prayer and doctrine. The binding was by skilled Portuguese immigrant silversmiths who brought the art of silver filigree to bookbinding in the UK.
